Richissime homme d’affaire, Aristide Leonides trouve la mort chez lui d’une façon suspecte. Sa petite-fille, Sofia, fait alors appel au détective privé Charles Hayward - qui fut son fiancé par le passé - afin de mener l’enquête, avant que la police ne s’immisce dans les affaires de la famille. Arrivé au château des Leonides, Hayward est vite décontenancé par l’ambiance qui y règne.
