Gerald Kingsland annonce dans un journal londonien qu'il cherche une compagne, pour vivre un an avec lui sur une île déserte. La jeune Lucy Irving tente de le contacter et après quelques rencontres, ils décident d'aller de l'avant. Une fois sur l'île, les choses s'avèrent beaucoup moins idylliques que dans les films, et peu à peu on se rend compte que c'est Lucy qui a l'envie et la force d'essayer d'aller jusqu'au bout de l'année.
