Le 23 décembre 1787, le Bounty quitte le Royaume-Uni sous le commandement du capitaine William Bligh et de ses seconds John Fryer et Fletcher Christian, à destination de Tahiti. Malgré plusieurs mises en garde, Bligh insiste pour passer le Cap Horn. Sa tentative est un échec total et il confie alors le poste de premier second à Christian. Arrivés à Tahiti, c'est la joie et la fête, et Christian devient l'amant de la princesse Mauatua, puis l'épouse.
