A la demande du professeur Boren, les savants Doug Standish et Craig Mosby embarquent à bord d'un sous-marin ultra-moderne, l'«Hydronaute», pour poser des sismographes au fond des mers. Une équipe de spécialistes, trois hommes et une femme, les accompagne. Ils entament une longue et périlleuse expédition.
