Le duc Ubaldo médite de s'allier secrètement avec l'Espagne afin d'attaquer Alfonso d'Este. Aussi, lorsque Riccardo d'Argentari et Maurizio d'Arcidosso viennent se mettre en travers de son chemin, Ubaldo décide-t-il d'éliminer tout bonnement ces troubles-fête. Maurizio, qui venait de refuser la main de sa fille Laura au duc, meurt dans un guet-apens dont Riccardo ne réchappe que par miracle. Tous le croient mort.
