Begotten is a 1989 American experimental art film written and directed by E. Elias Merhige, starring Brian Salsberg, Donna Dempsey, Stephen Charles Barry, and members of Merhige's theatre company Theatreofmateria. Its unconventional narrative follows the suicide of an unnamed godlike figure and the resulting birth of Mother Earth, whose Son of Earth journeys through a barren landscape. The film's visual style was heavily influenced by early silent film and there is no dialogue.
