They are found in Malaysia, Hawaii, India, Nepal, Italy, Indonesia, Korean Peninsula, Philippines, New Guinea, southern China, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Japan. H. patellifera lives in trees and in grasslands at the edges of forests.
